Laptop is Jesse Hartman, a New York-based musician/actor/filmmaker, and former frontman for the indie/pop group Sammy. The man has single-handedly resurrected the glory of early 80's analog synthesizers and redefined the art of wry pseudo-eurotrash vocals. His music is
frequently compared to that of a "modern day Gary Numan" or "Beck without the barking mad overtones," though I find it easier to think of Laptop as "dark, educated, retro synth-pop" with David Bowie-esque lyrics and just a pinch of David Byrne or DEVO thrown in for good measure.
Listening to dark humorous tracks like "21st Century Word," "The New You," and especially "I'm So Happy You Failed," you'll begin to appreciate just what a brilliantly neurotic songwriter Jesse is:
Word on the street says
Your second record's dead
And you're not doing very well
Can't say that I'm depressed
Still I could never guess
Just how good that makes me feel
I'm sinking... to your level
I'm sinking low down
I'm sinking
I know I'm going to hell
But I'm...Yes, I'm...
I'm so happy you failed
I'm so happy you lost your mind
I'm so happy you failed
Your misery makes me smile
See what I mean? lyrics so sharp you could put someone's eye out with them. The one thing Laptop doesn't do is take itself too seriously. Any that's what makes it so damn fun.
