When you hear "Petaluma, CA," you don't normally think of musical talent to rival that of indie legends like Suede, Jeff Buckley or Death Cab for Cutie, but that's what you get for underestimating The Velvet Teen. Though the band is still technically only a few years old, the trio (Judah Nagler, Logan Whitehurst, and Josh Staples) are no strangers to the world of music. Judah and Logan began playing together well over six years ago as part of the group Little Tin Frog, before embarking upon their solo project The Secret Band, joined shortly thereafter by veteran bass player and vocalist Josh (whose previous work included both The Conspiracy and The Wunder Years)
History aside, the band has demonstrated time and again that there's no limit to their vocal or instrumental range, be it soaring three-part harmonies or jarring soul-wrenching rock'n'roll screams. If you put a gun to my head and demanded someone to compare them to, I'd have to go with early
Radiohead (especially the last three tracks off of "The Bends"), but it really doesn't do either group justice. The Velvet Teen has a solid, infectiously catchy, song base from which to pull from, that should appeal to fans of indie and brit pop alike. Word has it, that a few major record labels have already shown an interest in these prodigies from Peteluma, so make sure you buy your CD's and T-shirts early so you can prove you heard them first before they got to be all big and famous.
